Successful introduction of a cashless ticketing system for the Brno public transport company
Initial situation
The Brno City Transport Company is the second largest transport company in the Czech Republic.
With a fleet of 330 buses, 130 trolleybuses and 281 trams, the company transports around 350 million passengers a year.
Before the new ticketing system was introduced, conventional validators for paper tickets were used.
The solution from Mikroelektronika
In July 2019, Mikroelektronika signed a contract with the Brno City Transport Company for the development and implementation of a modern, cashless ticketing system.
This innovative system was successfully installed in 735 vehicles in the fleet and includes
- Around 3000 CVT 45 validators: these enable both cashless payments and the validation of paper tickets.
- Flexible payment methods: Passengers can pay either by check-in/check-out (automatic billing without selecting a specific ticket) or by selecting a fixed ticket directly at the terminal.
- Combined use: The Validator CVT 45 is also equipped with a classic ticket validator to maximise passenger usage options.
- Management system: Mikroelektronika also developed an information system to manage fare revenue, which was seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure.
‘Pípni a jeď’- Beep and go- success story
Since the system was launched on 1 July 2020, Beep and go has established itself as an extremely popular payment method:
- Daily use: around 35,000 passengers make contactless payments directly in the vehicle every day.
- Transactions: To date, almost 45 million transactions have been carried out, generating revenue of over CZK 700 million.
- Flexibility: The system automatically adjusts the ticket to the duration of the journey, offering passengers maximum cost efficiency.
- Growing popularity: The share of contactless payments in total sales of single tickets increased from 38% (2021) to 58% (2023)
- Record day: On 20 December 2023, all previous records were surpassed with 68,501 transactions in a single day.
The Beep and go system is an impressive example of successful digitalisation in public transport. It not only offers passengers convenience and safety, but also enables efficient revenue management.
