Modern cashless ticketing in Prague
The Prague Transport Authority is the largest transport company in the Czech Republic. With a fleet of over 700 underground carriages, 1,200 buses, 15 electric buses, 17 trolleybuses and almost 800 trams, it transports almost one billion passengers a year.
The decision to introduce a new system
Mikroelektronika's first ticketing system was put into operation in Prague back in 1996 (and part of this system, in the form of ticket validators and ticket machines, is still in use today). Since 2019, Mikroelektronika has gradually installed a total of 2,100 CVP25 and CVP45 mobile validators in Prague trams, buses, trolleybuses, electric buses, metro stations and cable cars in cooperation with the ČSOB Group.
The use of CVP validators from the passenger's perspective
Passengers can purchase various types of season tickets, including discounted tickets, at the CVP validators. The purchase can only be made cashless with a debit or credit card. After successful payment, the validator issues the passenger with a valid season ticket.
Backoffice for managing the ticketing system
In addition to the installed hardware devices, Mikroelektronika has also implemented an information system to manage the ticketing system, which works together with the transport company's information system. The system monitors the functionality of the payment system and the remaining number of tickets online. The transport company is informed electronically in good time about a shortage of paper in the terminal or errors in a particular device. The system automatically sends data on the number and financial volume of transactions by ticket type.
